Geeks with Guns

This is something I’ve been meaning to write about ever since I read the article (and more importantly the comments on the article) “Top 12 Guns for Geeks and Gadget Goons” over at Gizmodo that revealed just how much crossover there is with geek/gadget culture and gun culture.

The funny thing about living in New York is that no matter how many friends you have, you continually have to remind yourself that your circle of acquantances and people you run into on a day to day basis in no way represent the average population of the rest of the country. That means that none of your friends probably have guns. No one I know owns a gun, although at one time I did live with someone who was into guns, but then it was rifles for shooting on a range and not what the article was about: the best handgun for concealed carrying purposes.

I’m not going to get into the debate of gun control (although I hate guns), because the bigger question to me is whether people who run around the internet flaming each other, pwning each other’s grammar, calling the WAHHHHAMBULANCE for each other and generally being loud-mouthed and childish should be packin’ concealed heat. I hate to say it, but it somehow smacks of overcompensating for physical shortcomings.

I dunno… call me crazy, but I’ll now remember to think again next time I’m considering attending any tech conferences in this country. (Especially MacWorld since it seems like some geeks are out to kill them some Finder… I just wonder if they eat what they kill!)

The Kings of Reggae

The Kings of Reggae After reading about The Kings of Reggae compilation CD on Cool Hunting, I headed over to Amazon and pre-ordered it. Arriving this morning, I was mildly amused by the fact that I hadn’t purchased a physical CD in quite a while.

Anyway, I popped it in and have been putting my office subwoofer through its paces all morning. Some of the jams are true gems I could never have identified by name, but remember enjoying way back when during my childhood in the islands. If you’re looking for something to push the dreary days of winter away, you could do mutch worse than this killer 2 disc set.

I need to remember to load this up on my iPod for the next time I head down to the islands.

Ladytron at Capitale

Ladytron at Capitale, originally uploaded by mmeltdown.

The show last night was a ton of fun. Ladytron sounded even better live and since the event was put on by Camel with them trying to get women to try their new Camel 9 brand, it was wall to wall women! Which is always nice.

I should remember to keep an ear out for more of these special concerts seeing as how great this one and that Gnarls Barkley one last year were.

Very cool video

Flying Dogs Bird by Pleix is one amazing video as the whole thing was shot at 2000 frames per second! The music by Vitalic defintiely contributes as well.

Anyway, I should remember that anything shot at 2000 frames per second looks very cool.

Ladytron Tickets

Ladytron Tickets Last night, following some tip my woman had run across, we headed down to Arlene’s Grocery hoping to pick up some free tickets to a special Ladytron concert at Capitale. When we showed up, no one at Arlene’s Grocery knew what we were talking about.

Since we were early and hoping to have drinks anyway, we stuck around. Eventually, a girl who looked suspiciously like she had tickets showed up and seated herself in the back.

To make a long story short, we got the tickets. I hope it’s a great show, “Destroy Everything You Touch” is definitely one of my favorite songs.

I need to remember to keep the 22nd open.

Click Now For Additional Happiness

Wake Up Mr. Sleepy Poster I had the great fortune to check out Richard Foreman’s latest production “Wake Up Mr. Sleepy! Your Unconcious Mind Is Dead!” the other night thanks to a friend of mine and I can’t believe how much I loved the thing. I had never been to a Foreman production before. I’m don’t follow theater, so I had actually never even heard of him, although now I wish I had.

Wake Up Mr. Sleepy is a combination of theater, film projection, and sound/music/voice over that “postulates the invention of the airplane (controlled by a horde of baby-doll pilots) as the death knell of the unconscious mind. Foreman is responding to a world in which visionary sages and poets are being replaced by specialists who make platitudes out of the immediately observable and hand-feed them to the public.” Oh, and there are aliens involved! But really, that sort of didn’t matter. Somehow, you could just watch the whole mind bogglingly bizarre show unfold, letting it all wash over you without reading into every last detail.

Out of the five of us that went it seemed as though the three guys at least liked it while the women didn’t. Odd. Did our tiny sampling suggest that women prefer a bit more narrative and traditional structure to their theater?

At any rate, I should remember to check out the next mind expanding Foreman show.

(BTW, the title of this post is something that’s repeated numerous times during the show. Being that I work in online advertising, this really stuck with me. )

Bloc Party VS Sudoku

Bloc Party Weekend in the City Album Art OK, this is something that keeps bugging the hell out of me. I mean, I dig timely lyrics as much as the next guy… but I can’t help cringing everytime I hear:

You spend all your spare time; trying to escape… with crossword puzzles and Sudoku

Does Sudoku really need to infiltrate music? Why would Bloc Party want to date their album like that? I get that the main drift of the album hovers around the youth of today and the current state of affairs, but still. When Sudoku is dead and gone in five years and I return to this album, I can imagine that I’ll be really bothered by that reference. Especially since it’s sung so clearly and with such weight.

Anyway, on the whole, I dig the new album Weekend in the City, but I can’t help but feel as though the vocals feel more self-conscious then the previous album. Kind of as though Kele Okereke is signing to hear himself sing rather than belting out thoughts as they explode from his person. Just not quite as passionate as before.

I need to remember never to play Sudoku.

More Reasons for Bad Memories

This is from an article on Wired about “Big Questions.”

Most brains can handle only five to nine short-term memories at once. Newer information - phone call! ice cream! - can bump a previous memory out of storage before it’s committed to long-term recall. Even worse, new memories tend to merge with permanent ones, muddying the recollection of ritual activities. Michael “Professor” Solomon, author of How to Find Lost Objects, says it’s easy to accidentally substitute one routine motion for another. So look for your keys where you normally put your wallet. If that fails, check the car, the sofa cushions, the door lock, and (duh) your pocket. You’re probably staring right at them.

Now, if only I could remember to remember.
